The institution was established in 1975 offering B.A. course to the leaners so the Department of Social Science came into existence since the inception of the college. The journey of its 50 glorious years so far has witnessed many positive changes. The department is committed to assist the institute to achieve its mission of providing quality education at affordable cost. The department has contributed significantly in both qualitative and quantitative ways. It is now a post graduate department that offers B.A. with various subjects viz., Economics, History, Rural Development, Agro Services and PG degree in Political Science which has been started in 2024.

The department boasts of having the largest number of students on roll every academic year with great pride and honour. The learners take part in sports, cultural activities, extra co-curricular activities and bring laurels to the institute and the entire region. The numerous achievements of the department in games and cultural events are beyond the words. The department has maintained its own library which consists of 200 books. The needy students are provided books from here. The Department of Economics and History shares a common association Sapt Sindhu Association which conducts various extra co-curricular activities throughout the year.

The Social Science department basks in the glory of being the biggest one in the entire college. It has four faculty members having ample experience in the field of teaching and research. It is also a matter of great pleasure that the faculty members continuously add to their knowledge through publications, FDPs, Presentations and FIPs etc. This is the only department that is multi-disciplinary in nature and it remains in constant touch with all other departments and keeps on improving and widening its horizons. The faculty also provides remedial classes, career guidance and psychological counselling to the students to keep them focused.

Apart from providing a post-graduation courses in Political Science, the B.A. students are offered 11 optional subjects i.e. History, Rural Development, English Literature, Punjabi Literature, Economics, Political Science, Physical Education, Maths, Computer Application, Communication Skills and Personality Development. The course opens up multiple avenues to the leaners to shape their future goals. Expert Sessions, Field Visits, Rallies, Webinars, Seminars and Invited Lectures are organised to help the students to make informed choices in terms of career as well as life. It works for the holistic and multidisciplinary growth of pupils and tries to instil social, emotional, intellectual, moral and physical capacities in an integrated manner.

The main objective of the department is to promote foundational literacy, and to help the students realise their uniqueness while focusing on the development of creative and critical thinking. The department has adopted the guidelines NEP 2020 which in itself is a huge measure that will bring radical change in the overall structure and working of the department. The UG and PG courses will now be offered with multiple entry and exit options.

Career Counselling

Career Counselling initiatives by the Department of Social Science aim to provide students with the necessary skills and guidance to navigate their career paths effectively. The faculty offers personalized career guidance and planning to all the students. The Department conducts various workshops and seminars from time to time for the students. Like, sessions on creating effective resumes and preparing for interviews for the students to prepare them for the competitive world. Career Exploration Workshops are introduced for the students to acquaint them with various career paths available to graduates. A bridge course on spoken English and personality development is organised so students can focus on skills like communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. A visit is organised by the Department frequently to the career fairs where students get a chance to meet potential employers and learn about job opportunities. Along with it, the faculty of the department organise outreach programmes-cum-career counselling sessions for the students of nearby areas to guide them for the best career choices. These initiatives help students from the humanities department develop a comprehensive career plan, enhance their employability skills, and transition smoothly into their professional lives.
